This painting, like other things I’ve done, plays on the idea that the Devil is the victim. In this tragic figure, I can find a persona that I find easy to empathise with. I tend to pack my sadness and grief into ideas like these, because it makes it easier to view them from afar and not be absorbed by them. It is also sometimes nice to imagine a character that has it way, way worse than you do. He definitely does.
